@christauph: well.... I tend to agree, but to some extent you have to minimize your chances... right?
any violence statistics aside (I could make up some, but rather not :P) it's about the risk and reward of a situation.
For example, I wear my seat belt, turn my laptop wifi off on a plane, and lock the doors to my house. Risk is not worth the reward in those cases.
And, in the case of Detroit, the risk just ain't worth that reward anymore.
(most of the time...)
#detroit
@d3c509b aka Steve: That's definitely too bad about your friend. But by that token, I would never go to Rochester Hills (grandparent's neighbors were robbed and killed in their upscale home), drive a car (cousin broke both legs in eight places in a 50mph head-on) or talk to strangers (damn Jehova's Witnesses got me AGAIN!) Hell, I would probably never leave the house. The reality is, bad things can happen anywhere at anytime. My personal experience has been that as long as you aren't actively perpetuating a dangerous situation, you're at no greater risk of getting hurt than anyone else. #detroit
@Ben Wojdyla: Man, I've been there a thousand times (used to work on one of GM's ad accounts) and it's always been plenty scary to me! I've truly never seen a US city take on the look of a war zone the way parts of Detroit has, New Orleans included. But hey, I truly wish the place well. There's some soul and some history to the place and I appreciate some of the electronic music that came out of that place years back. I hope Mad Max can be kept at bay... #detroit
@christauph: well, I was going to head down to Detroit restaurant week and do my part... but the weekend before my buddy got knocked out in front of greektown casino.
They stole is wallet, his dignity, and needed 32 staples in his head. He was so out of it in the back of the ambulance that he thought he was being kidnapped, and broke out of the ambulance.
Happened at night, but still during normal hours. He is 6'4" and about 200lbs, hardly a target.
Even if that is an isolated case, it is still scary. I only call myself a "detroiter" to people who don't know the suburbs well. I spent 14yrs of my life in Detroit, but we knew it was time to move out when our neighbors added a privacy fence, glass block windows, bars on the door, a security system and a rottweiler. 2yrs later the house got raided by Detroit SWAT.
Maybe it's just my personal experiences, but... Detroit honestly scares me.
#detroit
I could use that parking ramp. #detroit
anticlimax, defined. #detroit
@danio3834: dork #detroit
Lame. They spent HOW MANY hours of their worthless lives doing this? #detroit
@powermatic: You know, that's a damn good idea. I might just do that next payday. #detroit
*yawn*
Actually it's unfortunate, it was a pretty interesting piece of sculpture up there, mysteriously on the fourth floor, hanging out a window. This and the grumman van in the fourth floor look too new to be there since the factory closed... How did they get up there?
#detroit
New Category for Jalopnik:
Stationary Hoonage...
@oldgraygeek: Not my favorite as far as ownership goes, but a well-loved vehicle, full of sound and fury and signifying fun! You know, of course, what SAAB stands for: Swedish All-Around Buggy. #detroit
@Vulcan Has No Moon: You just have to figure out how to make the bears move out first. #detroit
It's cooler that the truck was even up there that high. #detroit
Douchebags. It would've been a better vid if one or more or all of them would've gotten hurt. That truck didn't deserve such disrespect.
F-ing douchebags!
#detroit
@KNaudi: [www.flickr.com] #detroit
@Iron-Balls Minardi: Now that would actually have been clever. #detroit
@Ben Wojdyla: Don't forget the reasonably priced real estate. Detroit has the lowest real-estate prices in the country. #detroit
lol! That's so funny. I know one of the guys who did this, he was telling me how he was going to drop the truck out but they were having issues with tires. #detroit
@Potatosw✭tter: Well, I suppose maybe it was time to remodel. They should really get some of those insulated curtains though..looks like it's going to be a bit drafty in there this winter. #detroit
@theeastbaykid: That's a result of putting your hands up for Detroit. #detroit
@Tanshanomi: Time to start putting a list together, Earl. #detroit
@crewj: I'd guess it was the front axle breaking loose. #detroit
@☠Grяrяrяrяrя, portrait of a chickenwolfmoosepig.: They were just cleaning house before it gets cold. Perfectly normal. #detroit
It's a depression when the economic paper reports on the activity of bums. Four months of planning... several journalists on hand... well they're not bums if it's picked up by the WSJ, right?
What were they on when they even tried selling the story there? Wall Street Journal in 2009: Crack meets blow.
#detroit
@Kuro: It's just you. It was way worse in the 80s and 90s, the Detroit of danger and gangs and violence doesn't really exist anymore, sure it's still got it's scary parts but what city doesn't? the only difference between now and then is that a lot of self-important hipster douches are pretending they're edgy and making media about how edgy they are and putting it on the internet.
The Packard Plant, which used to be one of the most dangerous places in the city, is now the go-to venue for red bull drinking suburbanite morons wearing tight pants with designer labels.
To prove the point, I'm heading down to Eastern Market, which is right downtown, to buy some locally roasted whole bean coffee from R.Hirt, which has been operating since 1887, and I'll maybe grab an omelette at Zef's while I'm down there. Detroit is not a "very scary place" anymore, just downtrodden.
@AclockWorkApple: Agreed, these kids are neither. They're just bored and extremely new to the world of vehicular destruction ridiculousness. #detroit
These morons haven't lived. "No one has ever pushed a dump truck out a window".
They think they're so epic. Fucking drive it out!
#detroit
@TR3-A: I be 48.
When I was a kid, we all drove Saab 96's. No slush boxes there... just the sweetest 4-on-the-tree ever made.
#detroit
@petersterncan: no need for VIN - it's a late sixties Ford judging by the shape of the fenders and cab. #detroit
@The5thElephant: I agree. A hipster would be completely apathetic to the whole dump truck thing in general, and more concerned about looking cool while riding a "fixie" and sipping on starbucks. A hippie...well, face it they'd be way too hashed out to do anything of the sort. #detroit
@WildManGrant: Conspiracy! #detroit
They should have an ED209 lurking in that building somewhere for just this reason. #detroit
Wow, I am actually quite amused that it actually landed upright and perpendicular to the factory wall.
You'd almost think they worked out the geometry for such a feat. In the future Idiocracy, this guy will be the Head of the Army Corps of Engineers.
#detroit
@d3c509b aka Steve: I hate to break it to you, but Detroit's rep has a lot to do with the attitude of suburbanites like you. If you're so ashamed to even be associated with it, how can you call yourself a Detroiter? The auto companies fucked the city over decades before they did themselves in. Detroit has a hell of a lot more going for it than some kids pushing a dump truck out of a window, despite the tired cliches that get passed around again and again. #detroit
@Shamoononon: I shave my legs.: I would also like to know that..... It is going to bug the hell out of me! #detroit
where the hell is Robocop when you need him?
They should have put explosives underneath it, now that would have been cool!
p.s. three f#*^in months????
#detroit
@theeastbaykid: That was very well played. #detroit
@Sth002000: It really sucks considering how nice that truck looked hanging out of the window
a pile of scrap on the bottom, big deal
losers
#detroit
Tombs robbed in antiquity. #detroit
@The5thElephant: Probably stereotyping, but then again anyone who takes that much time and planning to push a dump truck out of the window is the same kind of person that spends lots of time and planning on taking a perfectly good bike and making it have no brakes. #detroit
@RandomDesign: The next challenge is clear: Putting it back up. #detroit
@Tanshanomi: A check and a note of apology to the proper folks would go a long way towards righting a wrong. Just sayin'. #detroit
Seeing this, I don't want to hear my mutant, post-apocalypse kids say that "there's nothing to do". #detroit
@oldgraygeek: Project Truck Hell?
Hey, oldgraygeek, how old be ye? I am 61. I remember when automakers sold fewer than 10% of cars with automatic transmissions.
#detroit
I've been waiting for somebody to mention this, but nobody ever did. How did the truck get up there? #detroit
@I was drivin' that Model A: It was used for private storage at one point, so probably remnants of that business. I like to imagine it was something like Jones' Big Ass Truck Rental & Storage. #detroit
This = lame.
Now, winching it back, throwing in an old Pinto engine and driving it off the edge, jumping out onto the floor at the last split-second... THEN I woulda been impressed.
#detroit
Kids? The main guy was in his mid-30s! #detroit
The best part is that the truck got the full WSJ HedCut treatment: #detroit
"Wooohoooo...we finally accomplished our five year mission to push the dump truck out the window!!!!"
"Um, now what do we do with our lives?"
#detroit
@allen.pinkerton: Nope, besides ruin cool old trucks. #detroit
@Iron-Balls Minardi: Yeah, just put a plow on it and you have a perfect destruction derby (Or LeMons) candidate. #detroit
@d3c509b aka Steve: My point was more about assuming they were hipsters, and that being a universally bad thing in your opinion, but whatever. #detroit
@RandomDesign: My thoughts exactly. #detroit
@new22003: Planning=waiting for cinder-blocks to turn up on Freecycle. #detroit
Is it me or is Detroit the seedling of the Mad Max-imization of America? #detroit
These clowns never heard of a hi-lift? #detroit
Now what are you supposed to push down onto the incoming hordes of the undead as they try to climb up and eat your still living flesh? Seriously, doesn't anyone consider the zombie holocaust when they do these things? Amateurs... #detroit
@The5thElephant: uhm... duh.
I work in the South Eastern MI automotive industry.
@ppiddy: You'd think the elevator wouldn't be large enough...
Though this
is
the Packard factory, and those were some pretty large/hefty machines.
I still want to drive one of the late Clippers. Love the tail lights/mini-fins on the '55.
#detroit
This is proof of why Detroit is in such poor shape, if this is the best plan they could come up with. Our future engineers are idiots.
And the fact that this made the WSJ is yet another nail in the print journalism coffin.
#detroit
I'm a bit evil with an evil taught but instead of that old dump truck, wouldn't be funny to see a BMW or a Civic falling from the old Packard Plant? ;-) #detroit
@utron: Dateline NBC. #detroit
@ppiddy: I don't know what to say really other than I never once in my lifetime ever thought a factory was cute. Who would? #detroit
Darn, I really wanted to see one of them get hurt for being so stupid. Also since people were named, and faces shown... how long will it be before we hear of arrests for something or other?
BTW, that was a shame that they did that there, that was a nice looking part of the city.
Why is everyone hating so much on these kids, and calling them hipsters and hippies?
Way to be fulfill the stereotype that hipsters and hippies have of car lovers.
#detroit
@d3c509b aka Steve: Hipsters? What?
Your entire comment is just negativity.
#detroit
@utron: Metal slamming into metal (cars are made of multiple parts, and the parts on this truck are loose). There were probably sparks on the bottom too, but you couldn't see them. #detroit
Was it just me or was there a spark from the front of the truck upon impact? #detroit
I want to know what made the spark around the grille right when it hit the ground? #detroit
Meh, it was much cooler on the 4th floor.
Thanks for ruining it guys!
#detroit
The last standing law in Detroit: universal gravitation. #detroit
@I was drivin' that Model A: Or your RV. Which, incidentally, still has a refrigerator full of food. #detroit
@Iron-Balls Minardi: agreed #detroit
@RamV10: E A G L E S EAGLES!: I did, they could call it "Killing a Studebaker" #detroit
@LoganSix: your words touched my soul! #detroit
@AmishJohn: I agreed with someone above that the vid was a bit anti-climactic. As I was watching it I thought "the guys from Nitro Circus or jackass would have ridden the thing down..." #detroit
@SerialThriller: Therein lies my only solace.
I'm more than just a face, you know.
@FrankGrimes: Right and right. #detroit
well that was worth it, what should we do now? #detroit
@Who's A Toaster!!??: So metal on metal sparkley-time. Thanks! #detroit
@beercheck: c'mon, they blurred the faces... #detroit
@MaWeiTao: I agree, but it was cool that (they got lucky and) it landed on its wheels. #detroit
My name is Detroit. My coffer is empty.
I wish I had something to throw out of a 4 story window. Throwing my Old Lady out of it is STILL against the law.
#detroit
fuckin' hipsters.
But jalopnik, I understand you want to post on these stories... but man, your makin' Detroit look bad!
no... wait... Detroit is making Detroit look bad. I am ashamed to live in the same county as Detroit anymore. Luckily it has gotten past the point of sadness, and clearly gotten to the point of humor.
Any of my fellow Detroiters agree? Does this kinda stuff even affect you emotionally? I am simply desensitized to Detroit's blight.
#detroit
@new22003: videographer = some unemployed kid holding a camcorder. #detroit
@TR3-A: Nice Price or Crack Pipe... #detroit
@jedimario: Business Week was busy screwing up their list of ugliest cars. #detroit
@yisoo: Not enough oomph from skinny hipster arms? #detroit
"It wants out. We're getting it out of here." "It's been wedge in this window and that's what's been causing us grief"
Really? It's not the deterioration of your city because of the union's leaders greed and belief that you are entitled to make over $50k a year with just a high school diploma? It's not the corruption of your politicians trying to give everyone one everything only to see manufacturing be moved across the water to avoid having to pay for it? It's not the mass exodus from your state and the double digit unemployment as companies flee to find friendlier environments to grow? Look around at the bigger picture kid. It's not the dump truck in the window. The dump truck was just wanting to work again, not be pushed off the edge in an assisted suicide. Maybe it's you, Little Johnny, that wants out of your meaningless and useless life? Maybe it's you that needs the push?
#detroit
@new22003: Someone who thinks they're a "videographer" anyway (could the guy throw his name up there anymore? geez). They all seemed pretty impressed with themselves. There really must not be that much going on in their part of town.
I've done stupid shit too for my own amusement, but I never felt it required taping and passing around.
#detroit
With four months, I would have got it running and drove it out. #detroit
I'm still trying to figure out why there is a dump truck, and an old Grumman step van, on the fourth floor of any building. #detroit
@InternationalSuperspy: And they couldn't even keep the truck in the center of the frame... #detroit
what a pack of arseholes! #detroit
@Vintage Racer - with V-12 goodness: It's Detroit, speaking as a recently former resident, they truly had nothing better to do. #detroit
@jedimario: Well, they have to fill up the space not used by explaining how the early-30's depression can't happen exactly the same way, again, with something distracting.
There is a song which puts this concept to music quite well, I think it's a Timbuk III tune, but I cannot remember the title.
@Ben Wojdyla: I will have to check out the auction listings. #detroit
Well now I just want to visit Detroit and break some shit #detroit
@e30 guy: That would be the front axle detaching itself from the frame of the truck. It's more apparent in the slow mo'. #detroit
Back when I was in Catholic high school, the backpacking club got permission to spend a week hiking a huge plot of woods owned by a monastery. We found the original, unused 3-story stone monastery building out in the woods. We went in and made ourselves at home -- broke up some antique furniture to make a big fire in the fireplace, took about a hundred gallon glass bottles up to the roof and threw them down onto the sidewalk to watch them shatter, and then smashed up a working phone with a with a lock on the rotary dial, trying to call overseas just for the hell of it.
We later learned that the bottles were used annually when they made apple cider, and the phone was a nearby hermetic friar's only means to call for help in an emergency.
To this day, I wish I could go back and undo all we did that day.
Any chance these Detroit hooligans will ever come to regret THIS?
Nah, I didn't think so either.
#detroit
@FrankGrimes: That area's pretty well populated however. Just Detroit urban sprawl. If you want a Paper Street kinda place you head for south Detroit. #detroit
That looked like (almost) as much fun as I had when my old 5.0 convert got pulled into the water while launching a boat. Completely underwater. When the tow truck pulled me out, the passenger compartment was completely filled with water. Pretty impressive to see, actually. I highly recommend it. #detroit
@Ben Wojdyla: I would move there If I could get one of those railroad inspection trucks for cheap and I had a million bucks and a local home depot.
Or maybe just do what Bart Simpson did and mess around in an empty building till it fell down.
#detroit
Take note all you depressed and suicidal pavement stampers out there - flips are cool. #detroit
Well, that was quite anti-climactic. It wasn't much more impressive and pushing a toy truck out of a bedroom window. #detroit
Hmmm... anyone in the Detroit area who can take down the VIN so we can figure out the make/model of that truck? #detroit
Shit, I bet the dragon would've loved to give it a PUSH! #detroit
Wait.......People still live in Detroit? #detroit
Would have been better, in a Nitro Circus kinda way if one of them rode it down too... #detroit
I'll bet some enterprising Jalop could get this truck for less than $500. Then... #detroit
Perfect misty flip....nice #detroit
Oh good lord, people... get a few big guys, pick up the back a bit, and let gravity take over... 4 months of planning and a jack? Please..... #detroit
@dmoon: Leverage FTW. #detroit
@KNaudi: Well played. #detroit
@rigidjunkie: Not only that, but they actually worked at it for some time.
Not that I approve of what they did in any way though.
#detroit
@jedimario: +1. #detroit
Big deal they got it down. Now get it running and drive away and I'll be impressed. #detroit
Who would have guessed that "Robocop" was an ACTUAL look into the future? Sure the 6000SUX was obvious - the dystopian hellscape certainly SEEMED overdone...I guess not! #detroit
That's a good tough truck right there. Looks like might even still roll after that. #detroit
@KeyserSoze: not really, the line is still there, and used just a bit to the north, but it's all very heavy industrial; nowhere to come from, nowhere to go to. #detroit
Maybe they are trying to dump the truck on the attacking Chinese? #detroit
Eh, it was much cooler just hanging out the side of the building #detroit
i don't get the point of the jacks and bricks... why can't just push off the ledge? #detroit
Huh, who knew the old saying about Dumptrucks always landing on their wheels was true... #detroit
@KNaudi: kill the truck, push it out, make it fall. kill the truck, push it out, make it fall... #detroit
What were the sparks coming off the front from? #detroit
@vwminispeedster, pronounded Si-trow-in: Maybe it is because these asshole just added more shit to the streets of Detroit. #detroit
Four months of planning, yet they only managed to film it from one angle. Fail. #detroit
@vwminispeedster, pronounded Si-trow-in: They'd probably make a short film out of this and encapsulate it as a metaphor for the death of the auto industry and the need for green viable sustainable modes of arrrrggggghhhhijusthadananeury... . #detroit
I mean, what else is there to do in Detroit? #detroit
@Ben Wojdyla: Sweet, the public transit electric trolley infrastructure is already in! Throw up some lines and you're good to go! #detroit
"Have you ever thrown a dump truck out of a fourth-floor building?"
Let's face it, if I was one of those kids, I'd relish the opportunity to do that. It was only a matter of time before it got thrown out, seeing as it had been pushed to the side of the building previously.
Next up: to push that GMC Grumman step van out of the side! And it won't take me four freakin' months like those damn kids.
Get a job!
#detroit
@Drederick Tatum: +1
Don't think anybody else got it though. Shame.
#detroit
Wow, I didn't really believe Detroit was as dumpy as you say it is until now. Somebody named their kid 'Reft'? #detroit
@vwminispeedster, pronounded Si-trow-in: Yeah, what he said... #detroit
I'm not pleased with how much one of those punks resembles me. #detroit
@grzydj: Packard is way too far gone for that. It just needs to be leveled, but it's nearly a half mile long and full of asbestos and sits on a rail line that no longer runs so there's no impetus or money to get it done. #detroit
@FrankGrimes: + many 1's #detroit
Dumpty got Humptied. #detroit
"Included a photo of a group of suburb residents and canadians who I found trying to push out this truck from the packard plant's fourth story window last sat. After 8 broken jacks and 3 months of work, they finally pushed the truck out of the hole they made in the building's wall. Then they left after rejoicing at the crash."
These guys are the worst bunch of hooligans I have ever seen. What took them so damn long and didn't anyone read the weight limit on the jack(s)?? You guys fail at vandalism and at life. There should be a rule. You get two times to pull a stunt like this. Once to try and complete the act and/or figure out why it wouldn't work and the second time to fix what wouldn't work before and get it done. If you can't get it done in two times or less stay at home you annoying wannabe artsty hipster d#&ches. Don't ask me why this is getting me so fired up, maybe its because I am an engineer and I am frustrated they didn't use lever arms properly, maybe because it was shot all artsy and ended up on WSJ (whose damn video kept buffering buffering buffering) or maybe its because they could have used their artsy powers for good and documented the abandoned buildings (I would love to tour those places) in a sweet photo spread instead of for annoying the hell out of car lovers (or maybe just this car lover). Actually it's probably because this is another failed Canadian engineering prank. [in.reuters.com]
Get a brain morans!
Stories for the End Times. #detroit
Holy speed! 4 months of planning? They should not waste their time on the 4th floor of an ex-Packard plant, they should work on the 14th floor of the General Motors Corp.! #detroit
@Tomsk sez so long Ash78, and thanks for all the fish!:
I'm proud of that poor old truck. She stuck the landing!
#detroit
WOW why the rage against these kids? I think this is pretty cool and it looks like they actually took some precautions to make sure nobody was standing below. #detroit
I do love me some criminal mischief.
Throwing trucks out of buildings FTW!
#detroit
You guys are missing the biggest issue here. What on earth is this doing in the Wall Street Journal? #detroit
Wonder what sparked from the front when it hit the ground ? #detroit
Nobody has re-gentrified this neighborhood by making these abandoned factories into swank lofts? Or does that only work in cities where people want to stay? #detroit
the guy is all bragging about his "real deal" jack! Please... it's just a normal jack!
They are all full of themselves acting like it's some art or something. When I was a kid breaking crap was just fun we didn't need to say things like "these hot wheels just want to get smashed by this hammer and lit on fire"
#detroit
I have some down to Earth advice for those kids...
...stay off camera.
#detroit
@bmoreDLJ: they don't have schools in Detroit any more. They opted for a Lord of the Flies approach to close the budget gaps. #detroit
best part of it: It ends up rubber side down! #detroit
loved the smooth piano outro, so out of context and yet so WSJ. #detroit
This is what drugs does to people. God, what the hell??? I'm sorry but this just pisses me off. I love the Packard Plant and I hate when stupid people like this fuck around with it. Just let the Packard Plant rest for Gods sake. Leave it the fuck alone. I hope someone can save it from all this.
P.S. sorry about the language I just hate when people mess with stuff that SHOULD NOT be messed with.
#detroit
That was... lame #detroit
Not Seen:
Kids driving Truck into tree
Kids leaving Truck in the ocean
Kids setting fire to Truck.
#detroit
Durn kids! Get off my plant!
*racks shotgun*
#detroit
@AmishJohn: or UNDER it. #detroit
Poor truck. I'm guessing an International?
Also: Anyone wanna start a pool on how soon that stepvan will be "extracted?"
#detroit
All we ever got to do in physics class was drop an egg off the roof.
Nice Autozone jack they used there...
#detroit
KIDS SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL. #detroit
Please tell me a couple of the lil' bastards were in the truck. #detroit
